At the conclusion of the Book of
Acts, Paul is a prisoner in Rome. Yet, in spite of his difficult circumstances,
he continued “preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things
which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence (Acts 28:31).”
This may sound strange to those who viewed Paul from a purely human perspective
as the prisoner of the Emperor Nero. Paul, however, saw himself as “the
prisoner of Christ Jesus (Ephesians 3:1)” and as one “in chains
for the gospel (Philemon 1:13).” Therefore his circumstances did
not hinder his ministry, but “actually turned out for the furtherance
of the gospel (Philippians 1:12).”
In an effort to encourage his fellow believers he wrote letters which
have become known as The Prison Epistles; Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians
and Philemon. Through these letters Paul declared “the unsearchable
riches of Christ (Ephesians 3:8)” not only to his first century
brothers and sisters in Christ, but to the generations of Christians who
would follow. Now it is our turn to be challenged and, by the grace of
God, changed as we are confronted with the truth concerning who God is,
what He has done for us, and who we are in Him. Make every effort to be
present for this exciting series of messages.
